About Me

Welcome to Reading Help at Home. Here, you can find great tips on how to help your child become a better reader. I believe that reading is the gateway to wonderful opportunities in life. Yet, so many people struggle with reading. If reading problems aren’t dealt with early on, then the situation becomes magnified times 100 down the road. Reading help has to start early, and it needs to start at home. Yes, school plays an important part, but I’m a firm believer in the role that parents play in a child’s success with reading.

YOUR STORY

MeI have been a high school English teacher for over ten years. I have even taught college English since 2011 (I have both an M.A. in English and a M.Ed.). During this time, I have seen too many students who were more than two years behind in their reading levels. The problem began in elementary and just got worse as they moved up through school. As they got older, the reading selections got tougher, and they just gave up. So, by the time they were in my class, they just weren’t reading.

What’s worse is the number of college students that were poor readers. These young adults were struggling in their classes because they couldn’t keep up with the reading load. In a fit of frustration, I embarked on a deep dive into research to discover the solution to this problem. It was during this time that I was also working towards my Principal certification in the state of Texas. I had the wonderful opportunity of being an administrator for two years of a great elementary campus. Part of my research uncovered the fact that reading intervention needs to take place early on. So, I rolled up my sleeve and joined the effort at the elementary level. I was able to put into practice the things I learned through my research.

Yet, I was still only seeing small levels of progress. It wasn’t until I held a meeting with parents to discuss this dire situation that I realized that the missing ingredient was reading at home. Children need to be read to and to read at home on a daily basis! I then changed gears and instituted a reading at home program. Our students’ reading levels skyrocketed. I know firsthand the power of reading at home! I mean I should, reading is the number one hobby at my house. I just didn’t make the connection back then ( I wasn’t a teacher at the time).

I’m now back in the high school classroom because I felt that I could make a bigger difference as a teacher. But, I still promote early reading intervention and reading at home.

WHY YOU WANT TO HELP PEOPLE

I get that reading is not easy for everyone. While I know that parents want the best for their kids, sometimes they shy away from reading at home for a number of reasons. Maybe they struggled with reading themselves. Maybe they don’t know how to go about helping their child with reading at home. Or, maybe they are just so tired from working to provide a better life for their child that when they get home, they don’t have the energy for reading.

Whatever the reason, I believe so much in reading at home that I want to help parents help their children. I truly believe that reading opens doors. If our society wants to improve, we need an educated citizenship. This requires reading. So, I have built this site.

THE GOAL OF YOUR SITE

I created this site to be a place where parents can come and get tips on how to help their children with reading at home. There is a better way. There is an easier way. Parents don’t have to go at it alone. I’m here to help. I want to invest in the future by investing in the lives of children through reading help at home.
